2.11.5 Lying convincingly

Lying convincingly

If a character wants to tell a lie in a convincing manner, he/she must make a dice roll using his/her Acting (including lying convincingly specialism) + WP.

There is a modifier on the dice roll of +3 if the lie is a slight distortion of the facts or omission of known information ("being economical with the truth"), +0 if the lie is a normal lie, or -3 if the lie is a total outrageous fabrication.

The lying dice roll result determines how difficult it is for an onlooker to spot that the character is lying (see below).

Spotting lies

To recognise a lie by the body language of the person telling the lie, a character must make a dice roll using his/her Empathy (including spotting lies specialism) + PE.

If his/her dice roll result is greater than or equal to that achieved by the person telling the lie (see above), the onlooking character will spot signs in the person's body language that indicate he/she is lying. The character will not be able to know what the true story is, but a high dice roll result may enable the character to identify which aspect of what the person is saying is untrue.
