2.20.5 Butchery

A character can butcher a dead animal, fish or bird (i.e. take the skin off and separate the bits that are good to eat from those that are not good to eat) if he/she makes a dice roll using his/her Farming or Survival + ST.

The dice roll result shows how much of the meat, fur etc. the character manages to usefully obtain as follows:

Dice roll result Amount of meat etc. gathered
Less than zero Nothing useful
0 25%
1 50%
2 70%
3 80%
4 85%
5 90%
6 95%
7 or higher 100%

There is a penalty of -3 on the dice roll if the character is unfamiliar with the type of animal, fish or bird being butchered.

A character needs a sharp knife and some time (10 minutes for a small animal to several hours for a very large one) to butcher an animal. If he/she has to rush the job or does not have the right equipment, the referee may apply a penalty to the dice roll.

Success by 6 1/2 to 9 points 85% Sucess by 9 1/2 to 12 points 95% Success by more than 12 points 100%

There is a penalty of -3 on the dice roll if the character is unfamiliar with the type of animal, fish or bird being butchered.

If the character lacks the right equipment (e.g. a sharp knife), there is a penalty of up to -6 on the dice roll.

Butchery normally takes 10 minutes. If the butcher takes longer, he/she can add +2 to the dice roll for each doubling of the time (e.g. +2 for 20 minutes, +4 for 40 minutes, +5 for an hour, +7 for 2 hours, +8 for 3 hours, +9 for 4 hours, +11 for all day). If the butcher rushes the job (i.e. spends 5 minutes or less), he/she will have a penalty of -4 on the dice roll.
