2.43.2 Recognising rocks

When a character finds a rock, he/she must make a dice roll using his/her Mining (including relevant specialisms) + PE to recognise it.

If the dice roll is successful, the referee should tell the player what the rock is and describe its properties. If the dice roll fails, the referee should simply describe to the player what the character sees or feels.

The difficulty depends on how common the rock is:

Rarity Difficulty value
Common (e.g. chalk, limestone, granite, sandstone) 2
Uncommon (e.g. marble, coal, iron ore) 6
Rare (e.g. precious metal ores) 10
Very rare (e.g. a rock the referee has invented) 14
