2.45.1 Finding orientation

A character can work out which way he/she is facing by making a dice roll using his Navigation (including finding orientation specialism) + PE.

A character may substititute other relevant skills for his/her Navigation skill score in the dice roll. If a character can see the stars, he/she may choose to use his/her Science (including Astronomy/finding orientation through reading stars specialisms) instead. If a character is travelling underground, he/she may choose to use his/her Mining (including Navigation underground/finding orientation underground specialisms) instead.

The difficulty depends on what information he/she has to go by (e.g. sun, stars, moon, vegetation, known landmarks), and will be typically around 10 to pinpoint North accurately. If a character has no real landmarks (e.g. in dark tunnels), and is working solely from remembering the directions in which he/she has travelled, the referee should increase the difficulty of the dice roll by +1 per hour since the character last saw a good landmark.

If a character fails the dice roll, he/she will get his/her orientation wrong by up to 15 degrees per point by which he/she fails the dice roll - the referee should give the player misleading information accordingly.
