2.45.3 Using maps

A character can use his/her Navigation skill to read maps and make accurate maps.

Making an accurate map

To spot the key landmarks and record them accurately on a map, a character must make a dice roll using his/her Navigation (including using/making maps specialisms) + PE. The dice roll result sets the accuracy rating of the map, i.e. how easy it will be for others to read and interpret the map.

Reading maps

To correctly interpret a map and relate it to the landmarks around, a character must make a dice roll using his/her Navigation (including using/reading maps specialisms) + IQ. The character gets a bonus on the dice roll equal to the accuracy of the map (see above).

The map-reading dice roll result determines what the character is able to work out from the map:

Map-reading dice roll result Meaning
6 or less Unable to make any sense of the map
6 1/2 to 9 Can understand some of what the map is showing, but cannot understand major elements of the map
9 1/2 to 12 Able to broadly follow the map, but likely to miss some critical fine detail (at the referee's discretion)
12 1/2 or more Can relate the map to the surroundings, and hence follow the map to its destination accurately
