2.47.3 Researching information from reference material

A character can spend time finding relevant information out from studying available reference material if he/she spends some time examining it. The character must be able to read, and understand the language in which the reference material is written. One use of this reasearch is to find out what modifiers can be used successfully to carry out a specific magical ritual.

Once the character has completed a period of time researching, he/she makes a dice roll using his/her Reasoning (including Research specialism) + WP to see what information he/she has gleaned.

There is a modifier to the dice roll for how good the reference material is at his/her disposal at how long the character spends researching:

Time spent researching Single reference source (e.g. tome) Personal library (e.g. collection of relevant books) Comprehensive library
1 hour +0 +1 +2
3 hours +1 +2 +4
1 day +2 +3 +6
1 week +3 +5 +8
1 month +4 +7 +10
1 year +5 +9 +12

There is also a modifier for how obscure the information is that the character is seeking to research:

Type of information Modifier
Basic information (e.g. for a common magic ritual, what type of magic to use and whether proposed modifiers are compatible with it) +3
Detailed information (e.g. information on a less common magic ritual) +0
Very obsure information (e.g. information on a rarely performed magic ritual) -3

The dice roll result shows what information the character gets:

Dice roll result Meaning
1 1/2 or lower Complete misunderstanding. Draws completely invalid conclusions from the research (e.g. in the case of researching a magic ritual, will believe that proposed modifiers will work, regardless of whether this is in fact the case).
2 - 5 1/2 Some misunderstanding. Has the basic picture largely correct, but draws wrong conclusions about some of the more detailed aspects.
6 - 9 1/2 Incomplete understanding. Has the basic picture largely correct, but is uncertain about the more detailed aspects.
10 - 13 1/2 Partial success. Has the basic picture correct, and some but not all of the more detailed aspects.
14 or more Full success. Successfully understands all aspects of the subject being researched, including relevant information that the character did not start their research looking for (e.g. in the case of a magical ritual, the referee must tell the player all the possible modifiers available for that ritual, even if the player was not planning to use them).
