2.48.4 Geography

If a character wants to recognise where he/she is, he/she must make a dice roll using his/her PE + Regional Knowledge (Geography). The difficulty value depends on whether he/she has ever been there before and what the character is trying to achieve.

Character's knowledge of geography Activity Difficulty value
Character has been there before Recognise major landmark 2
Recognise main features of location 4
Find an obscure location 6
Character working from second-hand description only Recognise major landmark 4
Recognise main features of location 7
Find an obscure location 10

For example, Cogan is visiting the City of Zanzibar in the Eastern Steppes. He has been there once before. He has Regional Knowledge of 3 and a PE of +1/2. His basic value is 3 1/2, which means that he will automatically recognise the major landmarks of the City. He is told to meet someone at the Rising Sun inn, which is an obscure location somewhere in the poor quarter. If he doesn't ask for further instructions but trusts his memory, he will have to make a dice roll 2D - 2 1/2 and get a result of 6 or more to find his way there without getting lost or having to ask for more instructions. He rolls a 3 and a 1, giving a result of 1 1/2. Lost in a dark alley-way, he curses his fate.
