5.2.1.2 Wind direction

The wind direction is an important consideration when determining the weather conditions.

To determine the wind direction, roll 2D (the wind direction roll) and look up the result against the wind strength for the day on the following table:

Wind strength Result of wind direction roll (roll of 2D)
Same as previous day Prevailing wind direction Random direction
0 - Total calm, no breath of wind 6 or lower 7-10 11 or higher
1 - Gentle breeze (e.g. 20 kilometres per hour) 6 or lower 7-9 10 or higher
2 - Windy (e.g. 40 kilometres per hour) 5 or lower 6-8 9 or higher
3 - Strong winds (e.g. 70 kilometres per hour) 5 or lower 6-7 8 or higher
4 - Gale force winds (e.g. 100 kilometres per hour) 4 or lower 5-6 7 or higher
5 - Storm force winds (e.g. 140 kilometres per hour) 4 or lower 5 6 or higher
6 - Hurricane force winds (e.g. 180 kilometres per hour) 3 or lower 4 5 or higher

If the previous day's wind direction is not known, re-roll any "Same as previous day" result.

A prevailing wind direction is the normal wind direction that happens at that time of year in that area (e.g. trade winds, mistral, etc.). The referee should determine whether there is such a prevailing wind direction for this area at this time of year (there will not always be). If there is no prevailing wind direction, re-roll any "Prevailing wind direction" result.

If the previous day's wind direction is not known and there is no prevailing wind direction, the wind direction roll can be skipped, since the wind direction will have to be determined randomly.

If the wind direction is to be determined randomly, roll 1D (random wind direction roll) and look up the result on the following table:

Random wind direction roll result Resulting wind direction is from
1 North
2 Roll again: 1-3 North-East; 4-6 North-West
3 East
4 West
5 Roll again: 1-3 South-East; 4-6 South-West
6 South
