1.8.1 Background bonuses

A character receives background bonuses during initial character generation to help pay for the skills that the character should (in the opinion of the player and the referee) have learned, based on the character's background.

The player should start by working out what the character has done during his/her life so far and where he/she has been. The player does not need to define every aspect of the character's past history; he/she can leave some areas blank; blank areas can be back-filled during later play (see section 1.15.2).

Background bonuses effectively reduce the cost during character generation of purchasing skills that relate to the character's background. A background bonus is always exactly one-half of the minimum number of cps the character will need to allocate to the skills relating to that background.
