2.18.1 Understanding feelings

A character can read another person's body language to correctly read their emotional state, feelings or moods if he/she makes a dice roll using his/her Empathy (including understanding feelings specialism) + PE.

There is a modifier for how well the character knows the person, from +2 if the character knows the person well, to -2 if the character has never met the person before. If the character is not in a face-to-face discussion with the person, the referee should give a penalty of -1 to -3 to the dice roll. Similarly, if the character cannot see the person (and is relying on hearing only), there is a penalty of -3 on the dice roll.

The dice roll result will determine the extent to which the character reads the current emotional state, as follows:

Dice roll result Effect
Zero or less Completely oblivious to the person's emotional state.
1-3 Can spot very obvious emotions (e.g. anger), but will miss more subtle signs.
4-6 Can spot normal moods (e.g. tiredness, stress, relaxation).
7-9 Can spot inobvious or concealed emotions (e.g. checked back anger, concealed fear).
10 or more Can get an insight into underlying feelings or motivations behind emotional state.

If the other person is not feigning their current emotions, the dice roll result determines whether the character spots the emotions are faked. If the dice roll result is less than that of the feigner, the character will be taken in by the feigned emotions.
