When a character has a skill, he/she will have a score in that skill, representing his/her general ability in that area. A character's skill score is determined by how many cps the character has allocated to the skill. This is shown on the following table.
Skill score | Meaning | Total cp value | Extra cps to increase from previous score |
0 | No expertise | 0 | 0 |
1 | Basic familiarity - knows something about the area, but mostly relies on raw ability. | 1 | 1 |
2 | Competence - understands all the basics and can do simple tasks. | 2 | 1 |
3 | Skilled - significant advantage over an unskilled person at tasks in this area | 3 | 1 |
4 | Highly skilled - significant expertise in the area. Able to attempt difficult tasks. | 4 | 1 |
5 | 5 | 1 | |
6 | Expert - routinely performs tasks an untrained normal would find impossible. | 6 | 1 |
7 | 8 | 2 | |
8 | Mastery - fully versed in the finer points of the skill.. | 10 | 2 |
9 | 12 | 2 | |
10 | Super-human ability - unbelievably good | 14 | 2 |
Some (very ususual) characters may achieve skill scores above 10. Each additional point of skill score increases the cp value by 2 cps.
It is possible also to have half-points in a skill, for example a skill score of 6 1/2. The value of a half skill score is always half-way between the values of the full scores either side of it. For example the value of a skill score of 1/2 is 1/2 cps, the value of a skill score of 1 1/2 is 1 1/2 cps, the value of a skill score of 6 1/2 is 7 cps, the value of a skill score of 7 1/2 is 9 cps, etc.
During initial character generation, the cps that can be allocated to a skill depend on his/her starting value and background bonuses.
During later play, the referee awards characters experience points, which he/she can allocate to skills (1 ep = 1 cp) to increase their scores. Accordingly, a character's skill scores will tend to increase during later play as the character becomes more experienced. A character may only increase his/her skill score after an adventure if he/she either used the skill score extensively during the adventure or if he/she receives successful teaching in that skill score.
